Understanding the Youth Athlete, A Differentiated Instruction Approach
Mr Hanif Abdul Rahman
Session Synopsis
How often do we enact the same training plan for a seemingly same group of players, but the training session turns out differently and disengaging? How often do we keep stressing the main focus of the training session, but our athletes just do not get it? Have we ever stepped back and considered changing our approach? What then can we consider, in order to change the training plan?
In this session, the presenter will share guidelines for differentiated instruction (DI). DI is a coach's planned and adaptive response to meet the diverse training needs of athletes, in order to maximise their progress. By attempting to understand the athlete holistically, thereafter focusing on the disciplinarity of the sport, participants will, by the end of the session, be better equipped to identify multiple access points to athletes' progress, informed by ongoing formative assessment.

Applying Learner-Centred Approaches in FMS development and Multisport Experience
Dr. Miriam Lee, Dr. Jonathan Leo Ng & Mr Reiner Leong
Session Synopsis
Children who are better at moving are more likely to stay physically active for life. Yet, there are decreasing levels of movement competency in children. Movement competence is best developed through engagement in varied movement experiences which also contributes to individuals’ physical literacy.
Designing learning environments that encourage exploring, adapting, and discovering multiple functional movement solutions support the growth of a physically literate child (Rudd et al., 2020). This approach places emphasis on the role of coaches from that of "directive instructors" to that of "creative facilitator".
SportSG piloted two programmes that adopted learner-centred approaches informed by ecological dynamics (e.g., Nonlinear Pedagogy, constraints-led approach) to increase movement competence in children. One pilot encouraged exploration to develop fundamental movement skills through hockey. The other provided varied movement experiences through multi-sport programming.
Participants can look forward to insights from the pilot programmes and practical tips to design and apply learner-centred approaches as part of our coaching practices.

Developing Online Sport Psychology Activities to Promote Mental Health Among Children During and Post Isolation
Dr. Lucas Capalbo
Session Synopsis
The purpose of this session is to explore effective strategies to deliver mental health lessons through sport psychology to children online. Children in numerous countries were unable to remain active outdoors and engage with their peers and coaches. As a result, many of them began experiencing higher levels of inactivity, obesity, stress, anxiety, and isolation. A solution to mitigate the effects of long periods of social distancing was found in online activities promoting coping strategies through sport psychology to help children better deal with stress, anxiety, lack of concentration and motivation, and the fear of transitioning back to normality. By attending this session, you will learn how to design and deliver online sport psychology activities tailored to children ages 8-15 through guided-discovery, Q&A, and applied activities, facilitating discussions, using fictional and real characters to promote knowledge, and strategies to help participants transfer their sport knowledge to other contexts.

Session Synopsis B
Badminton World Federation (BWF) announced in January 2020 the approval of synthetic feather shuttlecocks in BWF international sanctioned tournaments from 2021 to increase sustainability within the sport, as opposed to the current use of natural feathered shuttlecocks. With the change in feather material, the flight characteristics of the shuttle is likely to be different; considering that it is a high drag projectile with its conical shape and heavier bottom. Consequently, the game-play could be affected. Understanding how this equipment change affects badminton game-play as early as possible is crucial in gaining advantage to perform at the highest level. Therefore, this research was conceptualised in partnership with Japan Institute of Sport Science (JISS) to investigate the differences between the current natural and new synthetic feathered shuttles through mechanical and human testing. Preliminary findings suggest changes in flight characteristics and possible adaptations made by players which will be shared in the presentation.

A. Assessing fitness in a confined environment: Potential usefulness of the burpees exercise
Mr Joshua Tai Qi Jun & Ms Wong Shu Fen
B. Practical Tips on How to "Appropriately" Interpret Our Athlete's Test and Performance Results
Ms Darine Choo
Session Synopsis A
The purpose of this session is to assess the possible usefulness of the burpees exercise in assessing the athlete’s cardiovascular fitness, strength and power.
Due to the covid-19 pandemic, many athletes were confined to their homes. During such prolonged conditions when they were unable to train effectively, it was unpredictable whether athletes could maintain their optimal physical performance when they return to sport. Hence, it is essential to monitor the athlete’s physical condition/fitness without the need for large spaces and special equipment. This presentation describes an original research conducted by SSI sports scientists in assessing the burpees exercise as an exercise test to assess the overall fitness and/or physical condition of an athlete.
Coaches may use the burpees exercise tests described in the presentation as simple tests to monitor their athletes' general fitness and physical condition when athletes are confined to their home for a prolonged period.

A. Mobile Applications for Measuring Physical Performance in Sport
Mr Julian Lim & Mr Etienne Ding
B. Evidence-Informed Training Plan in the High Performance Gym at the Japan High Performance Sport Center
Dr. Daichi Yamashita & Dr. Takaki Yamagishi
Session Synopsis A
Measuring physical performance is a critical part of any training programme because it allows the coach to evaluate, develop and monitor training programmes. However, the technology and expertise required to do so is often expensive and not user-friendly.
This is especially so for coaches that are not affiliated with a big organisation or universities and have limited resources. But with the rise of mobile applications and the capabilities of mobile devices, this is no longer the case. Mobile applications supported by hardware are now able to measure physical performance easily and economically. For example, mobile applications (such as heart rate monitors, player-based location tracking, or video analysis) that support training are gaining popularity in the sports performance industry.
The use of mobile applications in accessing sports performance will be covered:
- Assessment of lower body power with the measurement of vertical jump
- Testing of maximal strength through tracking the velocity (Velocity Based Training)
- Feedback of skills through movement analysis
- Reducing injury potential through load monitoring

In high-performance environments, athletes are highly trained and highly individualised. Therefore, it is crucial for coaches to optimise their athletes' performance through training programs with consideration of trainability and individuality of each athlete. However, it is one of the most difficult aspects of coaching. In order to give coaches the tools for maximising the performance of their athletes, the Japan High Performance Sport Center has been operating a sports science-equipped training gym known as High Performance Gym (HPG) since 2013. In the HPG, we have three core types of assessments; postural, force/velocity, and aerobic/anaerobic assessments. In this presentation, I would like to introduce these core assessments and their prospect for future uses. My objective is to give coaches additional tools so that they can guide their athletes to reach their full potential.
